English Curriculum Overview
At Naima JPS, we are committed to nurturing a love for language, literature, and strong communication skills in our pupils. We aim to provide an engaging and enriching educational experience that encourages pupils to think critically, express themselves clearly, and enjoy reading. Our goal is to create a lively, welcoming learning environment where every child can grow academically and personally.
Our English program is designed to have a positive impact not only on our pupils but also on our school community and beyond. To achieve this, we have created a language-rich curriculum that is thoughtful, creative, and challenging for all stages of the Naima JPS journey. Pupils are introduced to a wide range of reading materials to inspire a lifelong love of books. By exploring language and literature, pupils build valuable academic skills, while also developing essential qualities like empathy and compassion.
In short, English at Naima JPS is all about making a lasting, meaningful impact on our pupils and the wider community. We want every child to leave with a deep passion for language, literature, and communication. Our aim is to support each pupil’s academic and personal success, helping them grow into thoughtful, confident, and engaged individuals.
Our Approach to English at Naima JPS
At Naima JPS, we believe that reading, writing, and speaking are closely connected, so we strive to balance these skills in every English lesson. Our teaching is lively, creative, and vocabulary-rich, encouraging pupils to use language confidently in a variety of ways.
Our teachers know each pupil well, teach in small groups and adjust learning to ensure that every child feels included and supported. Developing a love of reading is a core part of our approach, and our Literacy Strategy outlines our commitment to building a strong reading culture throughout the school.
In our English lessons, we engage pupils with high-quality books and thought-provoking materials, helping them apply their reading, writing, and speaking skills across all subjects. We encourage pupils to look at texts from multiple perspectives—as readers and as writers—so they can think both critically and creatively.
Teachers provide regular, meaningful feedback in various forms—whether through verbal discussions, written comments, quick review activities, or visual prompts—ensuring that each child makes steady progress along their learning journey.
Enrichment activities include theatre trips, public speaking competitions, Spellathon, Inter-house Debate competitions, World Book Week, Creative writing competitions and Poetry day.
