Naima Jewish Preparatory School

PSHEE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education)

PSHEE Curriculum Overview

At Naima JPS, the health and wellbeing of our pupils are central to our ethos, especially through our comprehensive Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education (PSHEE). We aim to support each pupil’s development holistically, nurturing happy, resilient, and confident individuals who are prepared for both personal and academic success.

Our curriculum in PSHEE and Relationships and Health Education (RHE) emphasises emotional literacy, a key factor in supporting overall learning and well-being. Research underscores that children who are emotionally literate engage more fully in their learning and are better equipped to face challenges. We therefore prioritise teaching children to manage their health, communicate their emotions effectively, establish and maintain positive relationships, and understand the fundamentals of economic wellbeing. Grounded in Jewish principles, our programme encourages students to act with compassion, kindness, and a sense of responsibility, preparing them to make a meaningful contribution to society.

Aligned with the UK National Curriculum, our PSHE/RHE programme equips pupils with the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to develop into responsible and confident community members who value themselves and others as thoughtful, independent thinkers. The programme encompasses three core themes as specified in the national guidelines:

  1. Health and Wellbeing: Pupils learn about the importance of physical and mental health, recognising and managing risks, and developing healthy lifestyle choices. We provide practical strategies for maintaining emotional and physical wellbeing and support children in understanding how to stay safe both online and offline.
  2. Relationships: Our curriculum emphasises respectful relationships, understanding consent and privacy, and the development of strong social skills. Through discussions and role-playing, children learn the significance of empathy, effective communication, and conflict resolution. This is enriched through cross-curricular integration with Jewish Studies, where values such as compassion, honesty, and community are reinforced.
  3. Living in the Wider World: We prepare pupils for the broader social and economic environment, teaching financial literacy, social responsibility, and active citizenship. Children are introduced to key economic concepts, such as saving, budgeting, and understanding money, helping them develop skills for a secure future.

We actively promote Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) development as an essential part of fostering Fundamental British Values: Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, and Mutual Respect and Tolerance. Through assemblies, tefillah (prayer), and targeted activities, pupils explore what it means to be British, embracing the values and responsibilities of citizenship. Our school community encourages understanding and respect for different cultures, religions, and beliefs, while our Jewish heritage offers a unique perspective that emphasises unity, social justice, and respect for all.

To ensure that learning is dynamic and meaningful, we use a range of carefully selected resources and incorporate cross-curricular connections with both Jewish Studies and RHE. This integrative approach allows students to see the practical applications of their learning in daily life and enhances their overall educational experience.

Finally, as a school committed to social action, we foster a sense of community through social awareness and charity support. By engaging in fundraising events and community activities, children learn the importance of giving back and develop a sense of empathy and responsibility. We believe that happy, resilient learners achieve more and maximise their potential, and it is our commitment to cultivate a supportive environment where every child feels valued, inspired, and ready to make a positive impact.
